Atlantic Theater Company has released photographs from the October 27 opening of I Became We, Mona Pirnot’s choral play at the Linda Gross Theater, taking in the company on stage and the celebration that followed.
The pictures, by photographer Rebecca J Michelson, start with the full company on stage and then follow the evening off it. Playwright Mona Pirnot appears with director Sarah Benson and composer Jack D. Coen, and again with Atlantic’s artistic director Neil Pepe and managing director Jeffory Lawson. Both Pirnot and Coen brought family along: she posed with her mom, he with his parents.
Guests on the night included David Greenspan, whose name Pirnot put in the title of an earlier play, I’m Assuming You Know David Greenspan, as well as Lucas Hnath, Michael R. Jackson, Deirdre O’Connell, Mary McCann and Eliana Theologides Rodriguez.
The play is one first-person monologue shared out across a sixteen-voice choir. A woman in her mid-thirties works through a decision that will shape the rest of her life, in plain everyday speech set to music in the manner of classical choral writing. Coen is also responsible for the musical direction, orchestrations and arrangements, and Margery Daley did the choral casting. Sets are by Mimi Lien, costumes by Louisa Thompson, lighting by Tuce Yasak and sound by Palmer Hefferen, with Tyler Crow as production stage manager.
The cast is Alison Cheeseman, Paul Chwe MinChul An, Nathan Fletcher, Mark Hanke, Oliver Holt, Natalie Pinales Holt, Heather Jones, Helen Karloski, Kathryn McCreary, Paige Nesle, Neil Netherly, Lily Hazel Nussbaum, Logan Pitts, Carrie Quarquesso, AnnMarie Sandy, Michael Steinberger, Gregorio Taniguchi, Tyler Tejada, Elizabeth van Os and Zen Wu.
