The Blue Violinist Over West End Avenue, a new play by Debbie Goodstein, began previews at Theatre Row on October 29 for a limited run through December 5, 2026.
Jonathan Silverstein directs the world premiere in Theatre Five at 410 West 42nd Street. BroadwayWorld reports that opening night is Sunday, November 1.
The play is set at an engagement party on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The Steins have gathered to celebrate, but the youngest son brings his new girlfriend, and her views on Israel open up old family arguments and secrets. Watching over all three generations is a mysterious blue violinist, a figure the play draws from Sholem Aleichem’s Tevye.
Goodstein, a filmmaker who has recently turned to the stage, told Our Town that she had a “strong personal connection to the subject” and that the play is “a family story more than anything else.”
The cast is Etai Benson as Yitzhak Stein, Barbara Walsh as Dina Stein, Adam Heller as Abe Stein, Harrison Bryan as Joseph Stein, Lauriel Friedman as Rachel Stein, Rory Kulz as Jake Stein, Ali Axelrad as Jenna, Yair Ben-Dor as Sami and Mike Labbadia as Vinny Bianchi.
Design is by Lauren Helpern (sets), Jennifer Paar (costumes), David Lander (lighting) and Daniel Baker (sound).
Tickets for The Blue Violinist Over West End Avenue are on sale now on our show page.
