Photo by Carol Rosegg Irish Repertory Theatre has added three weeks to its revival of Eugene O’Neill’s The Hairy Ape. The production, directed by Ciarán O’Reilly, was due to close on November 15 and will now play through December 6, 2026.

The company announced the extension on October 29, putting it down to popular demand. Performances began on September 25 on the Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage, and the production opened on October 4.

Jon Beavers plays Yank, the stoker whose pride in running the ship’s furnaces falls apart after the owner’s daughter, Mildred, pays a visit below decks. Elizabeth Teeter plays Mildred, with John Keating as Paddy, Ariyan Kassam as Long, Joanna Glushak as Mildred’s aunt and Adam Petherbridge as the IWW secretary and in the ensemble. Jonathan Crimeni, Nayib Felix, Hassiem Muhammad and Harrison Tipping complete the ensemble, and Audrey Cardwell and Richard Hollis are the understudies.

O’Neill’s 1922 play, first staged by the Provincetown Players, follows Yank from the stokehole of an ocean liner onto the streets of Manhattan as he looks for a place where he fits. The revival comes 20 years after O’Reilly first directed it for Irish Rep, in 2006.

Sets are by Charlie Corcoran, costumes by Orla Long, lighting by Michael Gottlieb and sound by Florian Staab, with original music by Ryan Rumery and properties by Nicole Rozanski. Casting is by Geoff Josselson Casting.

Among the notices, Sara Holdren of Vulture called it “a swift, sturdy revival that now feels unnervingly on-the-pulse.” Our review roundup gathers what the critics said, and our earlier report covers the casting.

Performances run Wednesdays at 2pm and 7pm, Thursdays and Fridays at 7pm, Saturdays at 2pm and 7pm, and Sundays at 3pm. An extra performance has been added on Tuesday, November 24, at 7pm, and there is no performance on Thursday, November 26.

Tickets start at $55, and patrons under 40 can buy $25 seats through Irish Rep’s GreenSeats membership. Tickets are on sale through the Irish Repertory Theatre website.
