The Visitors, the new play by Bryna Turner, is in previews at the Pershing Square Signature Center, where Second Stage is giving it a world premiere ahead of a November 9 opening night.
Turner is reunited with director Jenna Worsham. The pair were last together on At the Wedding at LCT3, a New York Times Critic’s Pick, and Turner’s earlier play Bull in a China Shop also came up through Lincoln Center Theater’s new-work wing.
Its center is Joanna, a woman in her mid-thirties who wants to become a parent. She brings her three siblings to her New York City apartment to ask them for something none of them sees coming, and the request leaves the four of them taking each other’s measure as adults. Second Stage bills the result as a comedy-drama, and whether the family comes out of the evening closer or further apart is the question the play leaves open.
The company of five is Esco Jouléy (Wolf Play, and the FX series Dying for Sex), Tony winner Celia Keenan-Bolger (Mother Play, To Kill a Mockingbird), Will Pullen (Sweat, The Receptionist at Second Stage), Mary Wiseman, who was also in At the Wedding, and Danny Wolohan (Camelot, To Kill a Mockingbird).
Scenic design is by Kate Noll, costumes by Asta Bennie Hostetter and lighting by Stacey Derosier, with sound design and original music by Fan Zhang.
Performances began on October 21 on the Irene Diamond Stage, and the run is currently scheduled through December 6.
