Jasmine Sharma writes and stars in The Jazmines: a rage play – and for legal reasons, a parody, which gets a single free presentation in Lincoln Center’s David Rubenstein Atrium on Saturday, November 14, at 7:30 p.m.
The piece is a play with music, scored by composer Xander Browne and directed by Asmeret Ghebremichael, whose credits include Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) and The Notebook. Lincoln Center bills the evening as the work’s debut there.
Its subject is the theater industry itself. The play is set in a satirical multiverse where brown artists compete for a place in the American canon, and each professional win costs them something in their private lives. Sharma’s own synopsis moves the action through auditions, a casting office and a post-show talkback, and keeps returning to the question of who sits behind the casting table and who stands in front of it. Sharma’s acting credits include Twelfth Night.
It is presented as a reading by Lincoln Center Presents, runs about 1 hour 40 minutes and is open to all ages. Entry is free and first-come, first-served; a Fast Track line opens at noon on the Monday before, November 9, and Lincoln Center members get priority entry. The atrium is at 1887 Broadway. Details are on the Lincoln Center website.
