Foster Atlantic Theater Company has released the first rehearsal photographs for I Became We, the new Mona Pirnot play that gives one woman’s inner monologue to a sixteen-person choir. Previews begin at the Linda Gross Theater on October 16.

The pictures, taken by Ahron R. Foster, find the singers at work on the score: seated in rows with their binders open, a conductor in front of them, a little over a week before the world premiere meets its first audience.

Pirnot has written the piece as a first-person monologue about a woman in her mid-thirties weighing one of the largest decisions of her life. Rather than give those words to a single actor, the production sets them for sixteen voices, keeping the language plain and contemporary while shaping it to the forms of classical choral music. Jack D. Coen composed the score and shares the lyric credit with Pirnot, and Sarah Benson directs.

For Atlantic it is a reunion. The company is welcoming back two Obie winners in Pirnot, the writer of I’m Assuming You Know David Greenspan, and Benson, whose credits include The Welkin. Coen, a Relentless Award winner, wrote Jo Jenkins Before the Galactic High Court of Consciousness.

The design team is Mimi Lien (sets), Louisa Thompson and Gylanni Carrington (costumes), Tuce Yasak (lighting) and Palmer Hefferan (sound), with Tyler Crow as production stage manager.
