Two River Theater sets the cast for Stir, a kitchen comedy by Melinda Lopez and Joel Perez

Key art for Stir at Two River Theater Two River Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey, has cast Stir, the comedy by Melinda Lopez and Joel Perez that runs from October 31 to November 22 in the Marion Huber Theater.

Philippe Bowgen and Maria-Christina Oliveras play Henry and Mariana, siblings who try to reconstruct their mother’s black bean recipe and, in the process, close some of the distance that has grown between them. Bobby Plasencia completes the three-person cast, making his Two River debut. Edward Torres directs.

The play arrives with a production already behind it: Lopez lists an earlier staging of Stir at the Old Globe among her recent credits. Her other plays include Sonia Flew and the solo piece Mala, each of which won the Elliot Norton Award for best new play. Perez, who appeared on Broadway in Fun Home, won the 2021 Voces Latinx National Playwriting Competition for From the Fountain.

Oliveras was most recently on Broadway in The Balusters, which brought her a second consecutive Drama Desk nomination; she also played Persephone on the national tour of Hadestown. Bowgen’s New York credits include The Changeling for Red Bull Theater.

The run includes a fragrance-free matinee on Saturday, November 7, at 2 p.m., a Play Date matinee with free childcare on Saturday, November 14, at 2 p.m., and an audio-described performance on Sunday, November 22, at 2 p.m. Tickets are on Two River’s website and from the box office at 732-345-1400.
