Constance Shulman takes over the role of Martha in The Holes on November 2, replacing Tina Benko for the final four weeks of the run at the Wild Project.
Playbill reports the casting. Shulman joins Bubba Weiler, Grantham Coleman and Jack Mulhern in the 89-seat East Village theater, where Max Wolf Friedlich’s dark comedy recently extended again and now gives its final performance on November 29.
Television audiences know Shulman as Yoga Jones on Orange Is the New Black, whose ensemble won three Screen Actors Guild Awards. A generation of cartoon fans knows her voice instead: she was Patty Mayonnaise on Nickelodeon’s Doug. Her screen credits also include The Curse, Broad City and Will Trent, and the films Fried Green Tomatoes, Weekend at Bernie’s and Strawberry Mansion. On Broadway she appeared in the 2019 revival of The Rose Tattoo.
Friedlich sets the play in a failing bar in an upstate city that new money is quickly remaking. Behind a padlocked door at the back is a room the regulars visit for comfort, release and possibly something far riskier.
Michael Herwitz directs, with music by Zack Villere, sets by Anna Grigo, lighting by Evan C. Anderson and sound by Brandon Bulls. Robert Pattinson is executive producer through his company Icki Eneo Arlo, and the lead producers are Hannah Getts, Russell Kahn and Adam Rodner.
What the critics made of the production is collected in our review roundup.
