Renée Elise Goldsberry and Santino Fontana lead a His Girl Friday reading at Symphony Space

Santino Fontana and Renée Elise Goldsberry, who lead the At Play reading of His Girl Friday at Symphony Space Renée Elise Goldsberry and Santino Fontana will head a one-night reading of His Girl Friday at Symphony Space on Wednesday, December 2, 2026, at 7pm, bringing the venue’s At Play series back for the holiday season.

Both arrive with a Tony Award. Goldsberry won hers as Angelica Schuyler in the original Broadway company of Hamilton, and Fontana took his for leading the musical Tootsie. Symphony Space has not said who will read which role, and it promises more casting news before the night.

The source is the 1940 screwball comedy that Charles Lederer adapted for the screen from The Front Page, the newspaper play by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur. The film made the play’s star reporter a woman, Hildy Johnson, and her editor her ex-husband, Walter Burns, who will try any trick to stop her quitting the paper and remarrying. Howard Hawks directed Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell in the original, and Symphony Space bills the script as one of the greatest screenplays ever written.

At Play is the venue’s strand of one-off staged readings, and Fontana is a regular there: he has appeared in its readings of David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre, opposite BD Wong, and Moss Hart’s Light Up the Sky, opposite Tony Shalhoub. The series’ best-known evening was Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite, which John Benjamin Hickey directed with Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker before the production moved on to Broadway.

The reading plays the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre, Symphony Space’s main stage at 2537 Broadway, and runs about 90 minutes. Tickets cost $47 to $60, plus a $5 service fee each, and are on sale now through our His Girl Friday page.
