Kevin Cahoon, a Tony nominee for Shucked, takes the title role when Ebenezer Scrooge’s BIG San Diego Christmas Show returns to The Old Globe in San Diego, from November 20 to December 27 with opening night on November 24.
The Dickens send-up is back at the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, part of the Globe’s Conrad Prebys Theatre Center in Balboa Park, for a six-week limited engagement. Previews begin November 20, the official press opening is Tuesday, November 24 at 7 p.m., and the final performance is December 27, 2026.
Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen wrote the comedy, and Greenberg directs. It keeps the frame of A Christmas Carol, from the Cratchit household to the three Spirits and the famous “Bah, humbug!”, but moves the whole story to a San Diego that is wintry only in quotation marks. The pair also wrote Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors and Crime and Punishment, A Comedy for the Globe.
Around Cahoon, a company of four splits the rest of the story between them. Susana Cordón plays Prudence Saint and the Ghost of Christmas Present, among others; Orville Mendoza is Bob Cratchit and Jacob Marley; James Romney covers Fred, Young Scrooge, Medium Scrooge and Tiny Tim; and Jacque Wilke is Gertrude Saint, the Ghost of Christmas Past and Mrs. Cratchit. Cordón and Wilke were both in last year’s staging. Max Lorn-Krause, Jake Millgard and Alexis Van Eyken are the understudies.
Artistic director Barry Edelstein called the show “in a word, a hoot,” and said the writers have given it a spruce-up for 2026, bringing its satirical references up to date and adding new San Diego jokes.
Sets are by Adam Koch, costumes by David I. Reynoso, lighting by Amanda Zieve and sound by Bart Fasbender. Casting is by Kim Montelibano Heil, CSA, and Anjee Nero is the production stage manager.
The show runs 75 minutes with no intermission, and children under five are not admitted. An open-captioned performance is set for Saturday, December 19 at 2 p.m. Tickets start at $48, fees included, from The Old Globe or by phone at 619-234-5623.
