In New Brunswick, New Jersey, George Street Playhouse has cast Richard Todd Adams and Matthew McGloin in 2 Pianos 4 Hands, which runs December 1–20 at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center.
Previews begin Tuesday, December 1, opening night is Friday, December 4, and the limited run closes Sunday, December 20. Tom Frey directs.
Ted Dykstra and Richard Greenblatt wrote the two-hander, and its two characters carry their names. Ted and Richard begin as eager young piano students and grow into hopefuls chasing concert careers, past exacting teachers, pushy parents and one competition after another. The music at the two pianos runs from Bach and Beethoven to Billy Joel, and the two actors also play every other person in the story between them.
Adams plays Ted and has played the role across the United States and Canada since 2001. Broadway credits include Cats, The Woman in White and The Pirate Queen, and a 2008 Jeff Award came for Javert in Marriott Lincolnshire’s Les Misérables in the Chicago area. McGloin plays Richard, in a tenth production of the show. Stage credits include The Play That Goes Wrong, along with Off-Broadway work for Prospect Theater Company, Ars Nova and Tectonic Theater Project.
The design team is Steve Lucas (scenery, projections and original lighting), Jason Flamos (lighting) and Germán Martínez (sound). Christina Woolard is the stage manager.
George Street Playhouse has sent work to New York before: its productions of It Shoulda Been You and American Son both went on to Broadway.
In the opening week, performances are Tuesday to Saturday at 7:30pm, with 2pm matinees Saturday and Sunday. The week of December 7 has evenings Wednesday to Saturday and matinees Thursday, Saturday and Sunday; the final week has evenings Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday and matinees Thursday to Sunday.
