Every Wednesday Night, a new pop/rock musical set in a karaoke bar, gets its Off-Broadway premiere at The Sam at The Flea Theater from March 23 to April 25, 2027. It is the mainstage production of Abingdon Theatre Company’s 34th season, and tickets are on sale now.
The bar is Escondido’s, and Wednesday is karaoke night. Jon and a handful of regulars show up every week to get out of their routines. The show follows them as the microphone gives each of them a little more nerve than they arrived with. Love, loss and what music can mend are the subjects.
Jon D’Agostino and Michael August wrote the music and lyrics. D’Agostino wrote the book, with additional book material by Max Mondi. Chad Austin, Abingdon’s producing artistic director, directs. Tony-winning producer Rashad V. Chambers is executive producer. Casting has not been announced.
The piece started as a single song by D’Agostino, founder of Demolition Music Publishing, and has since been through industry readings and workshops. It is August’s first musical. Abingdon gave its score an outing in May 2025 with a concert at Chelsea Table + Stage featuring Barbara Walsh, Tony Yazbeck, Kara Lindsay and Carrie St. Louis.
The run is limited. The show lasts 2 hours and 15 minutes, with an intermission, and plays at 20 Thomas Street in Tribeca.
The rest of the season, billed as Ever Forward, Ever Evolving, is mostly new-work development:
- The Pamela Paul Around the Table Reading Series returns with free staged readings, including Max Mondi’s No One Asked for This and Dave Droxler’s I DID IT, with more titles to come.
- The One Night Only Series features Jeff Kaufman’s new play Jericho Road Motel. Details are still to come.
- Brave New Voices, the company’s musical strand, presents Bobby at the Beechman: An Evening with Bobby Short at the Laurie Beechman Theatre on January 21, 2027, a night of Great American Songbook material in tribute to the cabaret singer. Austin directs.
- The seventh annual Raise the Page, Uplift the Word: A BIPOC Festival of Short Plays, produced with AMT Theater, runs February 2–3, 2027 at AMT Theater, 354 West 45th Street. Playwrights can submit until 11:59 p.m. on November 3, 2026.
Abingdon also holds its 34th anniversary gala on November 2 at the Edison Ballroom, honoring Michael Urie, Sandy Duncan and John Gasdaska. Austin said the season’s theme reflects “how Abingdon continues to grow while staying deeply connected to the mission that has guided this company for more than three decades.”
