A Morning with Ernie Bushmiller, a comedy about the cartoonist behind Nancy, opens on October 8 at the Mark O'Donnell Theater in Brooklyn with its first three performances already sold out.
Three more dates have been added: October 15, 16 and 17, all at 7 p.m. and open to the general public. The October 8, 9 and 10 performances are sold out. Tickets are sold through Eventbrite.
The play is set in 1976. Bushmiller has four gags to write and draw for Nancy, and a run of unexpected visitors keeps getting between him and the drawing board. It is the same year the National Cartoonists Society gave him its Reuben Award, more than four decades after he introduced Nancy in 1933.
The production is presented by Tom Gammill, a television writer whose credits include Seinfeld and The Simpsons. Also named on the listing are actress Lauren Servideo and the filmmaker and actor Owen Kline, who directed Funny Pages (2022) and played Frank Berkman in Noah Baumbach's The Squid and the Whale (2005).
The listing also carries Mark O'Donnell, who won a 2003 Tony Award as a co-writer of Hairspray and wrote for Saturday Night Live, and Steve O'Donnell, a writer and producer for David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel and Chris Rock. The theater, at the Entertainment Community Fund Arts Center, 160 Schermerhorn Street, bears Mark O'Donnell's name.
