Susannah Flood takes over as A in Pre-Existing Condition, with first photos

Susannah Flood as A in Pre-Existing Condition at the Greenwich House Theater. Photo by Austin Ruffer Susannah Flood has taken over as A in Pre-Existing Condition at the Greenwich House Theater, and the first photos of her in Marin Ireland’s play show her alongside Greg Keller, Dael Orlandersmith and Susannah Perkins.

Flood began on Sunday, October 18, and plays through November 7, the third of six actors to take the central role during the Off-Broadway engagement. She follows Lupita Nyong’o, who opened the run, and Phillipa Soo, whose stint ended on October 17; we reported at the time that Flood was next in line. Flood, a Tony nominee, was part of the company of Bess Wohl’s Liberation.

The play is Ireland’s, and Maria Dizzia directs it. A is never given a full name: she is a woman in the long, unglamorous stretch after leaving an abusive relationship, and the play follows the appointments, paperwork and small exchanges that make up recovery rather than the abuse itself.

The company around her is largely unchanged. Keller and Orlandersmith continue from the play’s 2024 run at the Connelly Theater, and Perkins has now joined in the role Sarah Steele played earlier this season. Josh Tobin and Sarin Monae West are the understudies.

After Flood, Hari Nef plays A from November 9 to 28 and Edie Falco from November 30 to December 19. Whitney White takes the final stint, December 21 to January 8, 2027, the last date currently on sale.

Flood’s first week coincides with the production’s post-show talkbacks for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. On Wednesday, October 21, Simone Monasebian hosts a conversation on changing the system, with panelists Renata Francois, Sharwline Nicholson, Lindsey Song, Ted Bunch and Orlandersmith, presented with Sanctuary for Families. Part of the proceeds from the run goes to the organization’s Survivor Leadership Fund.

Design is by Cate McCrea (sets), Enver Chakartash (costumes), Isabella Byrd (lighting) and Palmer Hefferan (sound). The new photographs are by Austin Ruffer, and our review roundup collects what the critics made of the production.

Pre-Existing Condition runs 75 minutes with no intermission at the Greenwich House Theater, 27 Barrow Street, and tickets are on sale now.
