Phillipa Soo is now playing A in Pre-Existing Condition at the Greenwich House Theater, the second of six actors to take the role during the play's Off-Broadway return. Her stint runs through Saturday, October 17.
Soo, a Tony and Emmy Award nominee, took over on September 28 from Lupita Nyong'o, who opened the run and played her final performance on September 26. Marin Ireland wrote the play and Maria Dizzia directs it. The production had its opening night on September 14.
The rotation has four more names to come. Susannah Flood follows Soo and plays through November 7, then Hari Nef takes the part from November 9 to 28 and Edie Falco from November 30 to December 19. Whitney White, a two-time Tony nominee who has directed three Broadway productions, closes the run from December 21 to January 8.
A is an unnamed woman working through the aftermath of a relationship that has changed her life, and the play stays with the quieter, everyday difficulties of moving on rather than the events themselves. The producers note that it deals with intimate partner violence, though no violence is staged. It runs 75 minutes with no intermission.
Around the central role, the company is unchanged from the play's sold-out 2024 run at the Connelly Theater: Greg Keller, Dael Orlandersmith and Sarah Steele return, with Josh Tobin and Sarin Monae West as understudies. Susannah Perkins is due to replace Steele during October.
Design is by Cate McCrea (sets), Enver Chakartash (costumes), Isabella Byrd (lighting) and Palmer Hefferan (sound), with casting by Taylor Williams and Anne Kauffman as creative consultant. Jessica Chase of Chase This Productions and Susan Kelechi Watson produce, and part of the proceeds goes to the Survivor Leadership Fund at Sanctuary for Families.
