Photo by Monique Carboni The New Group has released the first production photos of Rope, Gordon Greenberg’s new adaptation of Patrick Hamilton’s thriller, now in previews at the Theater at St. Clement’s ahead of its official opening on Tuesday, November 3.

The company’s founding artistic director, Scott Elliott, directs the world premiere, which began performances on October 13 and is scheduled to run through Sunday, December 6. The pictures are by Monique Carboni.

Greenberg has reached back past the Hitchcock film to the play that inspired it, and past the play to the Leopold and Loeb case that inspired that. His killers are two Princeton graduate students, gifted, privileged and badly bored, who come to treat murder as a test of their own intelligence. The evening turns on what happens when the room they control so carefully starts to tighten around them, and on the arrogance that got them there.

Cameron Monaghan plays Garrett Stern and Corey Fogelmanis plays Nate Singer, the two students. Elizabeth Gillies is Leila Arden, Jason Butler Harner is Rupert Cadell, Graham Phillips is Richard Raglan and James Waterston is Judge Kentley.

Greenberg’s recent credits include The Baker’s Wife at Classic Stage Company and Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors at New World Stages. On Rope the design team is Derek McLane (sets), Catherine Zuber (costumes), Jeff Croiter (lighting) and Leah Gelpe (sound), with fight direction by David Anzuelo.

Rope runs at the Theater at St. Clement’s, 423 West 46th Street, with most performances at 7pm and Saturday matinees at 2pm. Tickets are on sale now for the limited run.
