International ensemble The SuperGeographics will give Maybe Next Time, a new play by Caitlin George, its world premiere at the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater on West 47th Street, December 4–20.
The run is part of Plataforma, the Pregones/PRTT showcase for Latiné theater, and the company is presenting it in collaboration with Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater. Jonathan Taikina Taylor directs.
The play is a love story stuck on repeat. Across three acts, two lovers known only as C and X, played by Violeta Picayo and Juan Diego Bonilla, replay the same doomed romance in three borrowed styles: a Beckett-flavored take on Lucy and Ricky in the 1950s, a realist melodrama in the 1890s and a vaudeville tragedy in Ancient Greece. The couple stays the same while the world around them shifts, and each pass digs up the women who were killed off or written out of stories like theirs before they had their say.
Akiko Aizawa completes the cast named by the theater, and BroadwayWorld reports that Mahima Saigal joins them. Jackie Fox is the scenographer, and BroadwayWorld lists Austin Scarlett as costume designer, with more of the team still to come.
The piece has been a while in the making. An earlier version, under the title Parsley, was produced in part through IRT Theater’s Residency Season, and it was developed at Teatro La Memoria in Santiago with support from the Network of Ensemble Theatres and ART/NY. George is a writer and actor based in Melbourne.
Performances run Wednesday to Saturday at 7pm, with 3pm matinees on Saturdays and Sundays (the opening weekend of December 4–6 plays Friday and Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 3pm). The running time is about 90 minutes with no intermission, per BroadwayWorld. Tickets start at $35 from Pregones/PRTT, at 304 West 47th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues.
