George Abud and Lilli Cooper will play the Adult Men and the Adult Women in Danya Taymor’s Off-Broadway revival of Spring Awakening, and a new block of tickets for its extended run through Sunday, April 4, 2027 goes on general sale today.
The producer, Seaview, announced the two additions on October 8. Performances at Studio Seaview begin on Friday, November 27, and the run was extended to April 4 before a single preview had played.
For Cooper it is a return, nearly twenty years on. She created the role of Martha in the musical’s original Off-Broadway and Broadway productions, and made her Broadway debut in it at 16. She went on to play Elphaba in Wicked, first as an understudy on tour, then as the alternate in Australia and the standby on Broadway. She was Tony-nominated for Tootsie and Drama Desk-nominated for the revival of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and her other Broadway credits include SpongeBob SquarePants, POTUS and The Cottage.
Abud, an Emmy winner, took the 2026 Helen Hayes Award for playing Richard Nixon in The Unauthorized Hunter S. Thompson Musical. On Broadway he played Marinetti in Lempicka and was in the companies of The Band’s Visit and The Visit. Off-Broadway he has originated roles in a dozen productions, among them Nerd Face in Emojiland, which brought a Drama Desk nomination, and he was in The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui at Classic Stage Company. On screen he appears in Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing.
The two join a principal company announced earlier: Jack Bateman as Georg, Jada Simone Clark as Thea, Leif Coomer as Ernst, Ryo Kamibayashi as Moritz, Ashlyn Maddox as Wendla, Nando Morland as Otto, Antonio Porciello as Hanschen, Khadija Sankoh as Martha, Grace Slear as Anna, Tyler Jordan Wesley as Melchior and Amalia Yoo as Ilse. Bateman and Porciello were cast from the production’s open call in July, which saw 2,532 performers.
Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s Tony- and Olivier-winning musical puts a rock score to Frank Wedekind’s once-banned 1891 play about teenagers in late-19th-century Germany caught between desire and repression. It reached Broadway in 2006 with Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele and John Gallagher Jr., and Deaf West Theatre revived it there in 2015 under Michael Arden. This production moves it into a far smaller room.
Taymor directs, with choreography by Celia Rowlson-Hall and music supervision by Or Matias. Sets are by Christine Jones and Brett Banakis, costumes by Kaye Voyce, lighting by Brian MacDevitt, sound by Cody Spencer and special effects by Jeremy Chernick. Cynthia Meng is music director and conductor.
The production introduced its two new cast members in a short video:
