Eddie Grey’s CIRC gets a December encore at The Tank

Key art for CIRC, a play by Eddie Grey CIRC, Eddie Grey’s play about an 18-year-old and the body part he is about to lose, gets an encore engagement at The Tank, with seven performances from December 1 to 7.

The encore follows a strong response to the play at the Australian Theatre Festival, where Grey won the New Play Award for it. He also takes the lead. Neil Gooding Productions presents, and Emilio Ramos directs.

Luke, 18, has chosen to be circumcised. Before the procedure, the foreskin he is about to give up appears to him in human form and wants an explanation. To answer it, and wake up from the nightmare, Luke has to go back through the memories that shaped his sexuality. Along the way the play looks at growing up queer in Australia, and at the family love around it.

Grey plays Luke opposite JD Martin as Foreskin. Grey, who is Australian, appeared on Broadway in The Book of Mormon and Harmony, toured the U.S. with The Book of Mormon, and played in Wicked, Legally Blonde and Spring Awakening at home. Martin’s screen credits include Seneca, Manifest and Bull.

Ramos, who uses he/they pronouns, directed the Drama Desk-nominated Off-Broadway revival of See What I Wanna See and is associate director on the Broadway and touring productions of Maybe Happy Ending. Costume design is by Michelle Ridley and sound design by Germán Martínez.

The Tank is at 312 West 36th Street. Curtain is at 7 p.m. on December 1, 2, 6 and 7, and at 9:30 p.m. on December 3, 4 and 5. The show runs 70 minutes. Tickets are $23–$43 from The Tank or by phone at 212-563-6269.
