Audible Theater has extended A Ghost in Your Ear for a second and final time. Jamie Armitage’s headphone horror play now runs at Audible’s Minetta Lane Theatre through Saturday, December 12, and the first production photos of the New York staging have been released.
The run had been due to end on Sunday, November 22, so the new date adds close to three weeks, and Audible Theater says there will be no further extension. The schedule has already moved once this fall: when Lucas Iverson joined the company in September, the start of performances was pushed back to October 3.
The premise is a single long night in a recording studio. An actor turns up late for a rushed audiobook session and is handed a ghost story to read aloud; as the engineer keeps the tape rolling, the story stops staying on the page and starts to work its way into the room. Everyone in the audience wears headphones, and the binaural sound puts them in the studio alongside the performers.
Lucas Iverson (HBO Max’s The Pitt) plays the actor and Owen Campbell (A24’s X) the engineer. Jamie Armitage, a Tony nominee for SIX: The Musical, wrote and directs the piece, which was made in collaboration with the sound designers Ben & Max Ringham, Tony nominees whose credits include A Doll’s House and Prima Facie. Anisha Fields designs the set and costumes, Ben Jacobs the lighting, and casting is by Taylor Williams. TT Partners is the general manager.
New York is the play’s second stop. It began downstairs at Hampstead Theatre in London, in a production originally produced by HFH Productions and Playful Productions, where the run sold out and the notices were four-star across the board. The Guardian called it “truly terrifying headphone horror,” the Financial Times “high-tech horror that gets under the skin,” and Time Out “a proper scary little gem.” London Box Office reviewed the Hampstead staging at the time.
The new photographs, by Matthew Murphy, show Iverson and Campbell on either side of the studio glass, the red and white light strips of the set doing much of the frightening.
A limited number of $35 rush tickets are released on the TodayTix app from 9:00am ET, and $35 student rush seats are sold in person at the Minetta Lane box office from 1:00pm ET on the day of each performance, with a valid student ID and subject to availability. The theater is at 18 Minetta Lane in Greenwich Village.
