Todrick Hall’s sung-through musical MIDNIGHT will now stay at the Daryl Roth Theatre until Sunday, January 3, 2027, eight weeks beyond the November 8 date its Off-Broadway run was set to end.
Producer Caryn Sterling confirmed the extension on Monday, October 19, four days after the show’s October 15 opening. It is a quick move for a new musical, and the producers tie it to sold-out previews, which began on September 25, and to word of mouth that has kept building since.
Hall wrote and directed the piece. MIDNIGHT is set in the American South of the 19th century and tracks twelve linked lives, six Black characters and six white, as friendships grow, romances begin and inherited assumptions are tested. The score is sung through from start to finish and moves between gospel, R&B, pop, rock, folk, opera and musical theater.
What the critics made of the opening is collected in our review roundup. Among the notices the producers are quoting, Frank DiLella of NY1 called Hall “a musical force of nature,” and Dan Rubins of Slant Magazine said the show “sounds, looks, and innovates like the best new musical of the year.”
Hall leads a principal company of Jeremy Beloate, Jimmy Brewer, Kennedy Caughell, Dwayne Clark, Tony nominee Sidney DuPont, Ayana George, Autumn Hurlbert, Kolbi Jordan, Bella Coppola, Ciarán McCarthy and Charlotte Odusanya, with an ensemble of eight and nine swings.
The design team is Morgan Large (sets), Beck Jones (costumes), Jake DeGroot (lighting), Lawrence Schober (sound) and Charles G. LaPointe (wigs and hair). Laurence Stannard is music supervisor, arranger, co-orchestrator and music director, with co-original orchestrations by Mark Crossland. Sterling and Hall produce.
A $53 digital rush runs through the TodayTix app, opening at 9 a.m. on each performance day, with a limit of two tickets per person while they last. The show deals with violence and other mature material in its period setting, and uses gunshot sound effects, strobe lighting and atmospheric fog.
MIDNIGHT runs at the Daryl Roth Theatre, 101 East 15th Street, through Sunday, January 3, 2027. Tickets are sold through the production’s website, midnightoffbway.com.
