The Bengsons bring Ohio to the Greenwich House Theater in January 2027

Key art for Ohio, created and performed by The Bengsons, at Greenwich House Theater Ohio, the autobiographical musical by the Obie-winning duo The Bengsons, comes to New York this winter after runs in Edinburgh, Bristol and London. Previews begin January 17, 2027 at the Greenwich House Theater, and opening night is January 26.

Abigail and Shaun Bengson, the married indie-folk pair, wrote the piece and perform it themselves. Caitlin Sullivan directs. The limited engagement at 27 Barrow Street runs through March 27, 2027.

The story is Shaun's own. After walking away from the church, he built a life around music; the musical meets him as an acute, degenerative loss of hearing sets in, and follows his decision to face it with joy rather than certainty. In the couple's telling, it is a story about giving up one kind of faith and finding hope somewhere else.

It arrives with a strong record from the UK. At the 2025 Edinburgh Festival Fringe it sold out, won a Scotsman Fringe First Award and was a finalist for the Popcorn Writing Award. Runs at Bristol Old Vic and the Young Vic in London followed. The Times called it "rapturously good," and The Stage found it "utterly gorgeous."

Tony nominee David Bengali designs the video, Bethany Gupwell the lighting, Cate McCrea the set and Obie winner Nick Kourtides the sound. Alison Kopit is access dramaturg.

Three companies produce: Francesca Moody Productions, the Olivier Award-winning British company whose stage work gave rise to Fleabag and Baby Reindeer; Mike & Carlee Productions, producers of Oh, Mary!; and Weathervane Productions.

The Bengsons received a 2024 Obie Award for Sustained Achievement in Performance. Their New York credits include My Joy Is Heavy at New York Theatre Workshop and The Keep Going Songs at LCT3, also directed by Sullivan, whose recent work includes The Antiquities at Playwrights Horizons and the Vineyard, and Calf Scramble at Primary Stages.

Performances are Monday through Friday at 7pm, with two shows on Saturdays at 3pm and 7pm. Tickets start at $39 and are on sale now through the production's official website.
