Roundabout Theatre Company has added Rhinoceros to its 2026–2027 Broadway season, bringing Diane Paulus’s American Repertory Theater staging of the Ionesco play to the Todd Haimes Theatre this spring with Tatiana Maslany, Tony Shalhoub and John Turturro. The same announcement postpones the company’s previously announced revival of The Full Monty.
Previews begin on Wednesday, April 7, 2027, at the Todd Haimes Theatre (227 West 42nd Street), with opening night set for Sunday, April 25, 2027. It is a limited engagement through Sunday, June 13, 2027. The production will be the first Broadway revival of Eugène Ionesco’s 1959 play since its Broadway premiere in 1961, and the first of his plays Roundabout has produced.
The initial casting has Maslany as Daisy, Shalhoub as Jean and Turturro as Bérenger, the clerk who refuses to join the herd as the rest of his town turns into rhinoceroses. The rest of the company will be announced later. The text is Derek Prouse’s translation, in an adaptation by the American Repertory Theater.
The staging arrives straight from Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Paulus premiered it at A.R.T.’s Loeb Drama Center from August 14 to September 27, 2026, with Karen Brooks Hopkins as consulting producer. Maslany and Turturro both played that run, opposite Paul Giamatti, who is not among the names announced for New York. The notices were strong: the Wall Street Journal found it “outlandishly funny and eerily realistic,” and the Boston Globe wrote that “you don’t laugh until it hurts. You laugh and then it hurts.”
The route from A.R.T. to Broadway is a well-worn one for Paulus, whose Pippin, Waitress, Finding Neverland, Jagged Little Pill and 1776 all began there. For Shalhoub it is something of a homecoming: he was a member of the A.R.T. company from 1980 to 1984, before he moved to New York.
Paulus’s creative team comprises Riccardo Hernández (scenic design), Anita Yavich (costumes), Jen Schriever (lighting), Fitz Patton (sound), Markus Maurette (special effects), Tom Watson (hair and wigs), Kyle Krueger (makeup), Thomas Schall (fight direction) and Jill Johnson (movement).
Roundabout puts the postponement of The Full Monty down to cast availability. Subscribers’ tickets for it will be replaced, and the company has given no new timing for the revival beyond a promise to announce it at a later date.
Until opening night, Rhinoceros plays Tuesday to Saturday evenings at 8pm, with 2pm matinees on Wednesdays and Saturdays and a 3pm matinee on Sundays. From April 25, the Tuesday-to-Friday evening performances move to 7pm. Tickets are sold by Roundabout on 212-719-1300 and at roundabouttheatre.org; groups of 10 or more can call 212-719-9393 ext. 365.
