Hudson Valley Shakespeare plans Sunday in the Park with George and Macbeth for 2027

A Hudson Valley Shakespeare performance on the company's outdoor stage above the Hudson River in Garrison, New York Hudson Valley Shakespeare will stage four productions on its outdoor stage in Garrison, New York, between June 2 and October 3, 2027, among them a new Sunday in the Park with George directed by Amanda Dehnert.

The 2027 summer comes forty years after the company began, and it starts by going back to the beginning. A Midsummer Night's Dream, the first play Hudson Valley Shakespeare ever produced, returns in a staging by Ryan Quinn that runs June 2–September 25.

Two days later, on June 4, artistic director Davis McCallum opens The Cherry Tortured, or The Parable of the Great Unsticking, a new play by Aaron Posner drawn from Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard. Posner, whose earlier Chekhov rewrites include Life Sucks, moves the story out of 19th-century Russia and into the present-day Hudson Valley, where a woman called Miss Lulu comes back after five years to a family estate that is falling down around relatives who have not changed at all. It plays through July 31.

Sunday in the Park with George, the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical by Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and James Lapine (book), follows on June 6 and runs through September 4. Its first act is set in 1880s Paris, where the painter Georges Seurat is consumed by A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte at the expense of his relationship with Dot; its second jumps a century to his great-grandson, an artist trying to work out what to make next. Here it will be played in the open air, with the Hudson Highlands behind the stage.

This is a separate production from the Sunday in the Park with George that Barrington Stage Company and Tectonic Theater Project are planning for summer 2027 at the Boyd-Quinson Theater in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, with Moisés Kaufman directing, which we reported earlier this week.

Macbeth closes the season, running August 7–October 3 under Jenn Thompson, who returns to the company to direct it.

No casting, prices or on-sale dates have been given yet. Hudson Valley Shakespeare says those will come later, and notes in its season announcement that every date is subject to change.
