Heathers The Musical has signed off at New World Stages by breaking the complex’s all-time house record for a fifth time, in its final week of performances. The next stop is a first North American tour, which opens at the Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore in May 2027.
The record came in the week ending October 11, 2026, the last of an Off-Broadway run that had already set the house record on four earlier occasions. No gross was announced alongside it. The New York Times has called it “an outrageous, irrepressible musical packed with a mercilessly catchy mix of bangers and ballads.”
Performances began on June 22, 2025, on the back of the largest advance sale in New World Stages history. The engagement was first booked to end on September 28, 2025, and was extended four times. It was a homecoming of sorts: the musical premiered in Los Angeles in 2013, to a sold-out run, and transferred to the same Off-Broadway complex in 2014.
The tour is planned to reach more than 35 cities in the 2027–2028 season and beyond. The engagements announced so far are:
- Baltimore, MD, Hippodrome Theatre: May 15–22, 2027 (presale begins October 20)
- New Haven, CT: June 1–6, 2027 (on sale now)
- Chicago, IL: June 8–20, 2027 (on sale in spring 2027)
- Charlotte, NC: June 29–July 4, 2027 (on sale now)
- Greenville, SC: July 6–11, 2027 (on sale now)
- Hershey, PA: July 13–18, 2027 (presale begins November 11)
- Toronto, Ontario: July 27–August 29, 2027 (on sale in November)
In New Haven, a fan offer running through October 25 prices two orchestra seats at $149, or two mezzanine seats at $99, with the code BESTIE. More cities are still to be announced; the full schedule is kept on the official tour page.
Before the tour sets out, the current UK and Ireland touring company plays a limited run in Manila, at The Theatre at Solaire, from January 21 to February 7, 2027.
The book, music and lyrics are by Kevin Murphy (Reefer Madness The Musical) and Laurence O’Keefe (Legally Blonde The Musical, Bat Boy The Musical), adapted from Daniel Waters’s 1989 film, which starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. Andy Fickman directs. The story follows Veronica Sawyer, an overlooked student at Westerberg High who is taken up by the three cruel, glamorous girls who rule the school, all of them called Heather, until the enigmatic newcomer J.D. shows her how deadly the climb to the top can be.
In the UK, the show has had three West End productions and three tours, and won Best New Musical at the 2019 WhatsOnStage Awards. It was filmed in 2022 for streaming on The Roku Channel, and the producers count more than 1,400 productions of the musical worldwide. The North American tour is produced by Bill Kenwright Ltd, Paul Taylor-Mills and Jerry Goehring.
