Franklin David Zax spent more than a decade as a reporter before he turned to playwriting, and his new play, Aftermath, puts a young freelance journalist at its center. The first production photos have been released ahead of Saturday’s official opening at the Mezzanine Theatre at A.R.T./New York.

Directed by Colton Pometta and produced by The InterCircle, Aftermath began previews on October 19 and opens on Saturday, October 24. It is a strictly limited engagement, closing on Sunday, November 8.

The play picks up after the headlines. Josh Goldman, 28, has come home alive from a Taliban kidnapping in Afghanistan and is recuperating in the house he grew up in, with his parents. As he tries to find his way back to them, the play looks back at what drew him to the riskiest job of his career and what it has cost. Privilege, moral responsibility and sacrifice are all in play, set against a political conflict far from the family home.

Danny Kornfeld (Harmony) plays Josh. Tony Award nominee Steven Skybell (Cabaret, Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish) and Jill Stern (The Procession) are his parents, Allan and Linda Goldman, and Awesta Zarif (Queens, The Kite Runner) plays Mina Kharo.

Zax writes from inside the trade. His reporting has appeared in The New York Times, Slate, The Wall Street Journal and The Paris Review, and he has contributed to This American Life.

The design team is Chen-Wei Liao (scenic), Räyya Gracy (costumes), Lucrecia Briceño (lighting) and Stan Mathabane (sound). The production photographs are by Marc J. Franklin.

The Mezzanine Theatre is at A.R.T./New York Theatres, 502 West 53rd Street, off 10th Avenue. The running time is 1 hour 40 minutes.
